Why a buyer pays less than spot
Spot is the price of pure, refined metal traded in bulk. Your ring is neither pure nor refined — it is an alloy mixed with copper and silver, often with stones and solder in it. A buyer has to refine it, carry the cost of doing so, and take a margin. An offer of 70–90% of the calculated value is normal; anything under about 60% is worth walking away from.
Scrap value is a floor, not a valuation
If the piece holds a diamond, carries a maker's mark, or has any antique interest, scrap is the worst price it can fetch, not the right one. Melting an Art Deco platinum setting for its metal is how genuinely valuable jewellery gets destroyed every day. Value the stones properly first.
