These are estimates, not appraisals

Every figure on CaratBase is produced by a price model from the details you type in. Nobody has seen your jewellery. The model cannot know about damage, a poor repair, fluorescence, an unusual cut, a signature, or the hundred things a person holding the piece would notice in a moment.

CaratBase is not a licensed or certified appraiser, is not a member of an appraisal body, and nothing here is a formal appraisal. If you need a value for insurance, probate, divorce, tax, a legal claim, or customs, you need a certified appraisal from a qualified independent appraiser. Our figures may help you tell whether an appraisal looks sensible. They cannot replace one.

We do not buy or sell jewellery

Nothing here is an offer to buy, an offer to sell, a solicitation, or a guarantee that anyone will pay a particular price. We hold no inventory and take no position.

Prices move, and ranges are wide for a reason

Metal prices change every day and the markets close at weekends. Diamond and gemstone values shift with demand, and the lab-grown market has moved sharply in recent years. A figure accurate this morning may not be accurate next month.

Coloured stone estimates are wider still, because coloured stones have no universal grading standard and treatment can change value by orders of magnitude. Where our range is broad it is because the honest answer is broad, not because we have not tried.

Hallmarks and identification

Hallmark information is offered as general guidance. Marks wear, are struck partially, and are sometimes forged. A stamp is evidence, not proof. Do not rely on our reading of a mark alone before selling, insuring, or melting anything.

How we are paid

Some outbound links on this site earn CaratBase a commission if you go on to buy or take out a policy. Where that is the case it is disclosed on the page itself, next to the links, and those links carry a sponsored attribute.

Two commitments about that:

It costs you nothing. You do not pay more for using our link.
It does not change what we recommend. Every company we list would be listed anyway. Where the honest answer pays us nothing — as with appraisers, where we point to professional bodies rather than to any firm — we give the honest answer.

If a partner ever stopped being the right recommendation, it would come out of the list regardless of what it paid. That is the whole basis on which a valuation site is worth reading.
