What is a tourmaline worth?
A fine 2 carat tourmaline, heated and without certified origin, is worth roughly $1,555–$2,850 at retail — about $1,080 per carat.
Resale is far lower: $430–$755. Colored stones have no universal grading standard, so a buyer carries more risk and prices for it.
Tourmaline value by carat
Price per carat climbs with size far faster than it does for diamonds, because large clean tourmaline is much rarer than small. A 5 carat stone of this quality is priced at about 3.2× the per-carat rate of a 1 carat one.

Tourmaline value by quality, 2 carat
Color is most of it: saturation, hue and how evenly it holds across the stone. Then clarity, then cut. The tiers below are the trade's working bands; two respected dealers can put the same stone in neighbouring tiers.

Treatment matters more than size
This is the single most important thing about tourmaline value, and the thing owners least often know about their own stone. For a fine 2 carat tourmaline, the same stone runs from about $1,212 (unknown) to $7,050 (untreated, lab certified) — a factor of roughly 6× — while looking much the same across a counter.

Origin, but only if certified
For tourmaline, the sources that command a premium are Brazil, Afghanistan. A premium applies only when a recognized laboratory has certified the origin in writing. A seller's claim on its own is worth nothing.

Why the range is wide
Diamonds have the 4Cs and a dominant grading authority. Colored stones have neither. Color quality — which drives most of the value — is judged by eye, and two respected labs can describe the same stone differently. Any honest estimate for a tourmaline is a broader range than a diamond estimate, and ours is.
When a report pays for itself
If your stone might be worth more than about $2,000, a laboratory report on treatment and origin usually returns several times its cost. Without one a buyer must assume the least favorable case and price for that risk.
